How to Leave
Bending gender and genre, How to Leave tells the stories of three generations of the Bolton family, all portrayed by the same pair of actors. Told backwards through time, the first act, set in New York City in the near future, introduces Marc Bolton, a famous concert pianist, and his husband Thomas Wilder, a struggling writer. The second act, set the in the present day, features Marc’s parents, George and Darcy Bolton, nouveau riche Calgarians with a recklessly passionate relationship. Finally, the third act depicts George’s intensely Mormon parents, Charlie and Anne, in the Cardston of the distant past. Their life is an eerie, failed attempt to live as perfect man and wife. Despite their many differences, Thomas, Darcy, and Anne all face the same difficult decision: whether to their men—and how?
